I’m Scott Calvert, Seattle based Steadicam operator. I picked up my first rig in 2018 and I’ve been walking backwards from there. I come from a lighting and camera operator background, which to me makes Steadicam a perfect blend of traditional camera work and dynamic movement.
Plus, it’s fun! Adding that unique camera perspective and feel that only Steadicam can get is exciting and immediately rewarding. Instead of panning across a waterfront, why not scrape the beach as the water laps into frame? Follow your protagonist home through winding apartment hallways, or pull back from a conversation to reveal a bicycle, and then lead it down the street.
